Do you know that there are many variations and flavors to the dumplings? The Chinese migrated to countries all over the world and have adopted the culture of the country, even adapted the preparation of the rice dumplings - an excellent example is the Chinese Thai.

However, instead of traditional bamboo leaves, we use banana leaves as the wrapper and bamboo strips to tie the dumplings into a pyramid shape.

1. The Ingredients:
Home grown glutinous rice

2. Fillings:
Pork; dried mushrooms; dried chestnuts; salted egg yolks; dried prawns; peanuts

3. Seasoning:
Home-made Chinese five spice powder; salt; sugar; pepper and chicken stork

Normally, when rice dumpling is eaten, it is on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Luna calendar. It was a Chinese legend that dates back to 340 - 278 B.C, during the reign of the Zhou dynasty in ancient China. Qu Yuan, a poet and corruption-buster minister was banished in an unjust manner by the King. Eventually, the kingdom was over taken by the Qin, in despair he commit-suicide by jumping into the river on the fifth day of the fifth month.

The people who love his righteousness could not find his body. They paddled out on boats to scare the fish and threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish so as to keep his body intact. To this day, the Duan Wu festival which is the eating of rice dumplings and dragon boat race are tribute to him.
