It was a Chinese legend that dates back to 340 - 278 B.C, during the reign of the Zhou dynasty in ancient China. Qu Yuan, a poet and corruption-buster minister was banished in an unjust manner by the King. Eventually, the kingdom was over taken by the Qin, in despair he commit-suicide by jumping into the river on the fifth day of the fifth month.
The people who love his righteousness could not find his body. They paddled out on boats to scare the fish and threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish so as to keep his body intact.
